I'm using Windows 7 and was getting those annoying sounds and found a particular solution myself.
I went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items and clicked on Sound
From there, there is a window that has four tabs, go to tab that says Sounds
The very first one that is under Program Event is called Windows.
Under Windows, there are sounds such as Asterisk, Close Program, Critical Battery Alarm, etc.
Choose Asterisk and Select None at the bottom. Similar to how it explains above.
I first tested the sound and noticed I was mimicking the same annoying sound I was getting all along. After that, I knew that I needed to get rid of that particular sound and removed it.
After I did it, no more unwanted sounds, at least for now.

Thanks for this. I was just checking my web site in IE because I know some people still use it and those sounds were annoying the hell out of me. Christ, what a ridiculous browser! Thanks again for restoring a little peace and quiet.

Thanks. I should have known to look there but I was expecting it under IE somewhere. I keep so many things (ads and such) blocked that I just had my audio turned off because the information bar was always squalling.
