I’ve been meaning to move around my basement “network” setup for sometime. All my equipment has just been sitting on a table in the back room. I used to actually sit at the table and work at the server, but I rarely ever need to be “on” the server. (love remote desktop!)

So finally changed it up. I think the new setup creates more space, makes for easier access, and probably a little better cooling too.

Setup: Cable comes into the house, and into the Linksys cable modem (a very old cable modem, running software 1.1.5 r2) . From there it goes into my Linksys N router. The router goes to a network printer (Brother HL-2070), and into my 2004 “Server”, which is a Dell Dimension 2400 Celeron 2.4 Ghz (I just upgraded the RAM to 1GB from 512!). There is also a Fantom external USB drive connected to the server.

Another network cable goes up to the Kitchen PC. And the rest of the home feeds from the wireless signal, this includes 3 laptops, a Wii, and a Dell Axim.

Now everything is easy to get to and with the vents in the shelving, the air flow is much better too.

network setup after

Say again? Yes over and over during the infomercial they mention the free heaters. They say the offer is SO good, they are limiting it to 2 orders per family. Do people actually fall for this?

I love the video showing the Amish making the cabinets.

screen shot of video showing Amish hard at work

Yes, it is a nice looking heater, but please don’t say over and over on the TV ad (which is different from the YouTube version above) that you are giving away free heaters!

Identify this machine. Please leave a comment with your guess. Maybe I’ll come up with some reward for the person who guesses correctly. Yes, it’s a real tool, it was even used on myself!

Okay, time to give the answer. This strange machine is used in certain chiropractic office, that practices atlas orthogonal adjustments. I guess it would be called an Atlas Machine?

If you’ve had this procedure done – please comment and let me know what you think.

The way it works it you like on a table, the machine in the picture is carefully setup near the base of your neck. The machine then “taps” your atlas bone back into correct position. By tap, I really do mean tap, you barely feel anything. The machine is NOT as scary as it looks (Yes it looks like a painful machine). I will admit at first it felt great once my “atlas” was aligned. I got turned off as soon as I walked into the hall of the office I was shuffled into an office for the quick hard sell. Suddenly the Doctor who I had talked to and been with through multiple appointments disappeared, and I was confronted with “treatment” options. I can remember the exact payment amounts, but I remember is being around $2000 for the spinal correction. This involved coming in almost everyday for a while, then gradually scaling back to a few times a week, then finally a few times a month.

The way the whole thing went down just didn’t sit well with me. It just felt way to much like a well-rehearsed marketing process. Now I understand they have to make money, but I shouldn’t feel like I’m at a used car sales office. I firmly believe much of the hype is meant to be mental, if you *think* you feel better, you will feel better.

You can make your own conclusion. I belive this is the “official” website for the practice method and machine. http://www.atlasorthogonality.com/

Also, Montel had the procedure done and raves about it here.

Ever try to delete the contents of a large directory in nix type operating system? If you have many files you will get an error like “list to long” or something like that. This happens to some of my directories I use to cache pages, sometimes I want to clear them out manually.

So now what?

The easiest and quickest solution is to remove the entire directory with a command like this.

(Now, before you do it, you need to realize that you will have to recreate the directory when it’s done, so take note of the permissions you have on the directory first.)

rm -rf directoryname

You can see the directory is now gone “No such file or directory”.

Yes, that is exactly what I wanted!
