This movie is not what I was expected in the least. While I did not have high hopes for it, I never imagined it could have been as bad as it was.

This movie is not what I was expected in the least. While I did not have high hopes for it, I never imagined it could have been as bad as it was. I just sat there thinking, “What happened when they showed this to a test audience”, or “Didn’t they screen this when they were done?”. It is probably about the worst movie I have ever seen. It was supposed to be a kids movie, but I’d say it was far from it. The only thing that made it a kids movie was the setting of a toy store!

I’ll say I was turned off from one of the very first scenes where one of the main characters (a young boy) has his hat caught up on a pole sticking out of the front of the store. The scene already felt so forced. All I thought was “how and why would his had mysteriously be stuck up on a pole anyway” – it made no sense. The pole is greatly out of his reach or jump, even probably for an adult. Then as the scene moves into the toy store, the boy can be seen through the window hanging from the pole? Huh? Everything else goes downhill fast from there.

Mr. Magorium made absolutely no sense, and talked with a badly faked lisp, who one day decides he must die. I kid you not this is 75% of the movie. So many terrible cliché scenes follow from there…like: lets go to a clock store and set all the alarms to go off at the same time – yipee, and lets dance on some bubble wrap – how special. Lets be really rude and go to a mattress store and jump on the beds. There was not a single ounce of originality to this movie. I felt sick to my stomach watching these scenes, they were that bad.

Back to the assistant who Mr. Magorium has picked to take over the store- She apparently doesn’t even want to run the store, the movie leads us to believe her dream is to become a famous pianist or something. Throughout the movie she is only basically working as a store clerk, running the register and helping customers, she makes it clear it is just a job for money so she can play the piano.

Then there is a strange kid who seems to live at the store, and has no friends? (Where are his parents?) We see his mother briefly in the movie, and she apparently lets him hang around the store all day long. Later in the movie he invites the store accountant up to his room to play (without any parent knowing). They are shown playing in his room with funny hats and acting childish. The mom walks in and doesn’t really care. If there was a strange man playing with my kid in his room and I didn’t know about it – the cops would be coming to pick him up!

Anyway…I could go on and on about this movie. Please do not waste your time or money on Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium!

Owen Gleiberman has a great review that describes the badness of this movie better than I can…

Microsoft announced their new product today called “Surface”. I’d say it is a little ahead of its time yet, but could be useful for certain applications.

A product like this has to be 100% bug free and work flawless to be placed in public places for use by average people. It can’t scare off folks that aren’t used to technology, or it will end up hurting your business rather than helping it.

A restaurant application looked really neat for order drinks, desserts, and especially for paying for your meals. If it works well it could attract people in simply for the novelty of it. Microsoft surface will have a future, but it won’t be overnight.
